Underlying research

EEG neurofeedback is a form of neurostimulation based on the principle of operant conditioning. According to this principle, a behavior that is followed by pleasant consequences is likely to be reinforced and repeated. Through constant reinforcement, that behaviour is modulated and becomes a habit.

With Neurofeedback, you can learn to modulate your own brain activity and rebalance your brain’s over-active pace.


Neurofeedback for insomnia

Neurofeedback has been used by researchers to modulate the brain activity of insomnia sufferers and train them to gain better sleep.

The first studies using neurofeedback for sleep improvement date back to the 70s. Pioneers in this field were Sterman (1977) and Hauri (1982) who trained insomniacs to produce a brain activity pattern known as the sensorimotor rhythm. With this training, test subjects experienced a reduction in insomnia symptoms.
In 2008, Kerstin Hoedlmoser and her research group ran a nap study using Neurofeedback. They found that study participants were able to fall asleep 10 minutes faster and displayed an increased number of sleep spindles, indicating sleep quality improvement.
Similar conclusions were drawn in a later study investigating nocturnal sleep (Cortoos et al., 2010). This study showed that performing Neurofeedback led to decreased time to fall asleep (11 minutes) and reduced duration of wake-ups after falling asleep by 40 minutes.

Pendulum uses electroencephalography (EEG) sensors to read your brainwaves. When wearing our EEG headset, your brainwave patterns are quantified as mental states.

Information about your mental states is processed by our algorithm which has been trained to recognize the mental state associated with sleepiness in healthy subjects. As your mind gets closer to this state, you will hear a calming audio sound, which helps you to stay there and reinforce the mental processes involved in high quality sleep.

EEG headset

Pendulum is used during day-time, preferably in the evenings. With practice, you will learn how to produce a sleepy mental state automatically and strengthen your natural ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.
